Contest's rules

1 )   The participant :

1.1  Must be a full-time student registered in a Canadian university.
1.2  Must register before the competition and pay an amount of 25$.
1.3  Who arrives after the teams are defined or who does not come to the competition cannot request a reimbursement.

2 )   The room and material provided :

2.1  Each team will work in a dedicated room.
2.2  The organisers, volunteers, members of the judge panel, and observers will have access to the room while the team work.
2.3  Each team will have access to a computer with an Internet connection and an additional connection.
2.4  It is understood that the room and equipment provided free of charge by ETS for the competition will be respected and used carefully. If one of the participants is found to damage the equipment or room of ETS, the team may be disqualified and excluded from the competition.

3 )   Additional material :

3.1 Each participant may bring to the competition reference books, notes and other sources of nformation as a help during the competition. Each participant can not bring more material than he/she can carry with him/her upon his/her arrival.
3.2 Each participant may bring one portable computer and other peripherals. It is expected that all software licenses used will be respected.

4 )   Intellectual property :

4.1 A copy of the PowerPoint presentation prepared by the team will be given to the organizers of the competition before the presentations start in front of the jury. All presentations will be made available on the Internet and possibly showcased on posters.
4.2 The participants thus agree that their design concepts will be disseminated to the public. The presentation will clearly identify each member of the team.

MAIN STEPS of the competition (suggestion only)

  1. Presentation of each participant, affiliation (university), and expertise.
  2. Selection of a facilitation.
  3. Problem definition: clear description of the problem to be solved with possibly additional objectives defined by the team.
  4. Brainstorming period: each participant suggests ideas and elements of the solution.
  5. Decision: selection of the most promising ideas.
  6. Development.
  7. Each participant elaborates the part for which he/she is the expert. There should be several discussions with the other participants to ensure that every aspect of the building integrate well together.
  8. Preparation of the PowerPoint presentation.
  9. Rehearsal of the presentation.
  10. Presentation in front of the panel of judges.

The projects' parameters

The parameters to be considered for justifying the solution.

  • Massing and shape of building;
  • Orientation and location of the building on the site;
  • Integration of the building with its surrounding;
  • Landscape design;
  • Layout of the interior spaces;
  • Lighting;
  • Basic materials;
  • Window ratio on each exterior wall;
  • Interior finishes;
  • Type of heating and cooling system;
  • Building envelope;
  • Conceptual design of the structure (type of structure, materials, location of columns and load-bearing walls, etc);
  • Ecological strategies;
  • Rough evaluation of the environmental and social impacts of the proposed building;
  • Conceptual cost estimate;
  • Plan of the construction work;

Considering the short duration of the design process, the panel of judges will be expecting a preliminary concept, which will cover the considerations above. Thus, the team will try to detail, to the maximum of its capacity during the time allotted, these parameters and others that the team considers necessary.

Evaluation criterias

  • Originality
  • Relevance of the solution with respect to the initial problem
  • Integration of the various disciplines involved
  • Reasoned justification for the decisions taken
  • Environmental performance of the building
  • Oral and visual presentation
